about buddy bags of dixon
Buddy Bags of Dixon is a locally run program that provides weekend food for students in the Dixon School District whose parents/guardians may need a little assistance over the weekends. The program is similar to other programs that are operating successfully in many communities nationwide. Oftentimes, such programs are referred to as "Weekend Backpack Programs."
At the end of each week, participating students are supplied with a sack containing enough food for two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks and two drinks. These food items are purchased locally, or donated by kind individuals, groups and organizations. The food items are packed by volunteers weekly and provided to the schools for their end-of-week distribution to the students. The cost to provide each student with a month's worth of food is approximately $25. Currently, the program serves approximately 200 students within the Dixon community, although the 2023 Dixon School District Report Card has declared that upwards of 50% of enrolled students are considered financially eligible for our services.
Buddy Bags of Dixon was formed in 2013 and is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 organization.
